What I Watched This Week (13)

 AKIRA

Akira is set in Neo Tokyo, a cyberpunk (before the term cyberpunk even existed) style city. The story follows Kaneda a juvenile delinquent and leader of a bike gang and his friend Tetsuo a former member of the gang who has developed psychic powers. As Tetsuo spirals further out of control the story becomes a struggle between Kaneda, terrorists, the government, and Tetsuo on the streets of Neo Tokyo. The movie is visually beautiful with stunning colors and an unmatched take on the Neo-Tokyo cityscape. the story is so-so and I've heard it deviates from the manga it's based on quite a bit. overall The movie is great and obviously deserves a lot of credit for the popularization of anime in the West.

  1. I've watched Akira too! I really enjoyed the visuals as well, but I agree that the story could use more fleshing-out, which is what I'm sure the manga does. It's still very iconic and I heard that some people want to make a live-action.
