Why Nihongo?

Why, after spending four long and tedious years in high school learning Spanish, did I choose to start over from scratch with a much more difficult and much more tedious language? Two main reasons... the first is noble, the second is not.

Language is the basis for all that we think and understand, making it hugely important in shaping our worldviews. By learning another language from a culture so drastically different from my own, I hope that I might be able to better understand a different world view and broaden my understanding of my surroundings.

My second reason is Anime and Japanese food. I love Anime and credit it for making me the person I am today and Japanese food is just straight up delicious.

  1. I love Japanese food too. I'm a sucker for well-made ramen (not the store bought stuff), I'm talking homemade Miso or Tonkotsu ramen with sliced pork belly - so good! I think it's awesome that you're so eager to learn more about other cultures - I've learned a lot about Spanish-speaking cultures thus far in my life but not much about any Asian cultures, so this class should be great for me too!

  2. I love your reasons for taking Japanese, both the more noble reason and the more fun one :)
I love Japanese food too-- what's your favorite? I'm personally not the biggest sushi fan, but I love katsu curry, noodles (especially ramen and cold soba), and gyoza (among many other things)!

  3. Looking forward to learning Japanese with you! Like yourself, I studied Spanish throughout highschool, deciding to add in Japanese out of love of the food and the media. If you are a lover of ramen, as you seem to be from the Naruto photo, I highly recommend trying tsukemen if you get the chance. It consists of the noodles being served separately then heated in the broth, almost like a combination of ramen and soba.
